Do I need insurance? Moving internationally involves numerous parties to the transaction. Several companies will be handling the shipment from beginning to end therefore the risk factor is much greater, so having the proper insurance in place is very important.

Insurance/Valuation, Coverage & Claims... might be the most problematic and misunderstood part of any moving contract. You can buy three levels of insurance/valuation coverage: Limited Liability... is the minimum coverage required by law, and is included in the base price. You will receive 60 cents per pound for any lost or damaged item. While this coverage is better than nothing, limited liability insurance places your more valuable objects at a greater risk. For example, if your mover were to drop an antique crystal glass that weighs half a pound, all limited liability insurance would pay is 15 or 30 cents. If the moving truck disappears into the mist and is never seen again, the most the insurance company would ever pay is the legal maximum, $2,500. Because of these possible situations, Di$count Moving International suggests you buy extra insurance for your upcoming move.

All Risk Protection... All Risk which covers Door to Door or Door to Port shipments depending on that type of coverage you selected. Under All Risk Coverage the insurance companies require that in order for your goods to be insured they have to be professionally packed. Professionally means by a company that is in the business of packing & shipping household goods. There for whatever you decide to pack, would not be covered under this policy. Under All Risk you are covered for damages to individual pieces or loss up to its current retail market value.. The cost will be quoted to you with your quote inquiry that you submit.

Total loss Protection... Total loss which covers Door to Door or Door to Port shipments depending on the type of coverage you selected. Under Total loss your goods are only covered for a catastrophic loss due to a named peril such as sinking, burning, stranding or non-delivery of your shipment. This type of coverage does not cover damage to any single piece in the shipment. This type of coverage is intended for those who wish to do all their own packing and/or loading of the container in order to save money on shipping cost.

Do I need to provide an inventory to be covered? You must supply a valued inventory that shows the items being shipped and there value. Specific instructions and a valued inventory form will be sent to you along with the insurance certificate to complete.

Insurance for your items in storage

You will be completely responsible for the items that you place in your storage unit. It is advisable that you seek insurance. Take a complete inventory. Avoid storing valuables and antiques. Storage facilities will not insure any of your items except for moving companies that have their own facilities and have moved your items for you. This is because they have no ownership in your items.
